Lily and I went to see the widely hyped movie Crazy Rich Asians this afternoon, the end of its 3rd week of wide release. We did not read any reviews and so the movie was totally new to us.
The movie was about the relationship between Nick Young, the heir of the richest family in Singapore, and Rachel Chu, an economic professor at NYU.
The opening of the movie was comic - they were at a restaurant for a date, and that started rumor mills in Singapore from a secretly taken photo in NYC, U.S, a lot of images indicating rumor mills working. What happened in Singapore in the movie, when they went to Singapore for Nick's best friend Collin's wedding, was simply a extravaganza of the lives of super riches.
As the movie progressed, the story line started to form, one could feel that the couple were under the suffocating influence of Nick's mother, Eleanor. The side story of fashion icon Astrid and her husband Michael was a tragedy that illicited sympathy. The scenes of Young family making dumplings together was a touching one, and felt close to home. Nick and Collin's discussion on marriage and economical status, during Collin's bachelor party on a barge, was interesting.
The story line moved forward as expected: Nick proposed, Rachel agreed, Nick's family openly opposed, Rachel's decision to sacrifice and letting Nick's go.
With his family's threat to disown him, Nick chased Rachel onto her flight back to NYC, and proposed again with his mom's family ring!! ......
A good movie to watch.
