Autumn at Veteran Lake of Chickasaw and Downy Woodpecker

We hiked on veteran lake trail at Chickasaw National Recreation Area on the morning of October 30th to see foliage, before going to Lake Murray for the weekend.

When we got there, we had the whole lake for ourselves - no one else was there! The foliage there was for sure not as spectacular as those at Canada or New England. The dotted colors here and there, plus the tranquility and the bright blue sky made the foliage attractive and appealing.

There were many birds, mostly very small. Their chirping broke the quietness from time to time, they flew from trees from one side of the trail to the other. But we could barely see them clearly.

A few red birds, presumably northern cardinals, were darting in front of us, a lonely America coot in the lake. Under one tree, I saw and heard many tiny birds. From their behavior, I guessed that they were woodpeckers. But we never saw such tinny woodpeckers - it turned out they are downy woodpecker, the smallest woodpeckers in north America!
