Hidden Treasures of the Pasir Ris Park

Pasir Ris Beach and Park is a favorite place of ours, and we have been there multiple times. Each time, we either enjoyed the 3.5 km beach trail or used it as a launching pad for kayaking adventures to Pulau Ubin, situated just across Johor Strait.

However, on this fine day, October 1st, 2023, we decided to delve into the less-travelled paths within the park, particularly the quiet mangrove boardwalk and the bird-watching tower located in area 2.

The mangrove boardwalk, reminiscent of the one at Sungei Buloh, provided us with delightful moments of birdwatching. Armed with binoculars, we observed the usual suspects: collared kingfishers, ash tailors, and oriental pied hornbills. Yet, what truly set this day apart were our encounters with some fascinating lizards!

One of these remarkable reptiles was a vibrant male oriental garden lizard. Its eye-catching features included a crimson throat and dark patches on either side of its neck. Its scales displayed a gradient of hues, transitioning from a rich brown at the head to a dull green on its body and tail.

Later on, we stumbled upon a female oriental garden lizard, gracefully perched among violet flowers, specifically violet wild petunias. If not for our keen observation, one might easily mistake her for a part of the flower's stem. While smaller and less vibrant than her male counterpart, she exuded a unique charm of her own.

Our exploration led us to an unexpected treasure—a serene clearing showcasing an open gallery of wooden crafts. These intricate creations were carved from raw logs,  incorporating the natural shapes of the wood. The exhibits ranged from tree snakes to a sprout, each a testament to the artisans' creativity and craftsmanship.

Once again, our curiosity and adventurous spirit rewarded us with a day of unexpected discoveries and the simple pleasures of nature.
