We hiked on
almost every outdoor trail of significance at Singapore (including
Clementi Forest,
the Deck,
Keppel Hill Reservoir ,
coast to coast trail) in 3 years at Singapore. This has been confirmed again and again via conversations with our Singaporean friends until last weekend.
Last weekend I read a social media post about 50 trails in Singapore that many locals don't know. It is a good list, but apparently not a complete list. It does not include the famed
coast to coast trail listed on Singapore National Parks website, neither does the Deck . However it has one trail I did not know before - the trail to Bukit Brown Avatar trees - which we hiked last Sunday.
We did not hike on the "official" trail around the Bukit Brown Cemetery, but went straight to the Avatar Trees. This is another unmanaged trail, like Clementi Forest, the Deck or Keppel Hill Reservoir.
One can drive close to the Bukit Brown Avatar trees from an obscure unnamed side road off Kheam Hock Road. We drove in about 200 meters and parked the car on the side of the paved, but broken road.
The trail to the avatar trees is mostly paved. There are quite a few tombs along the trail, they almost faded into the surroundings due to overgrown grass and plants.
The area is very green, tall trees, tropical plants, tall grasses. There are a lot of birds. We heard bird chirping all the time while there. We saw many birds, black nape orioles, yellow vented bulbul, mynas,.. crisscross in the open areas and between trees, , a lot of birds, ... there are also butterflies.
Avatar trees are basically tall column shaped trees, many are dead trees' trunks covered with overgrown vines. There is no clear definition what an avatar tree is except for trees in the movie Avatar. In the context of the movie, "avatar tree" refers to several types of sacred trees including the Tree of Souls and the Hometrees. To me Avatar trees are basically tall column shaped trees, many are dead trees' trunks covered with overgrown vines.
We also visited a nearby taoist temple - 新恒山亭大伯公庙. Nothing special there, but we spotted a collared kingfisher unexpectedly.
