The Blemishes of a 5 Star Hotel - A Quarantine Journal

Confined in a room of a hotel 24 x 7, made me see things I might not see or pay attention to during a regular 1 - 2 day stay. One week into our 14 day quarantine at JW Marriot Singapore, I observed quite a few blemishes of the 5 star hotel.

Dirty window broken eaves

The first time we open the curtain of the floor to ceiling window, we saw a spectacular Sunset only. During the past 7 days, when I looked outside the window, especially when it was not sunny, I saw dirty window and surprisingly, broken eaves!

But my main grief with the floor to celling window, a.k.a. glass wall, is that there is no access to fresh air outdoor. This may not be a big problem if we were able to go outside of the building to breath. In this 24 x7 confinement, we have breathed in recycled air from AC day in and day out.

Creep Toilet

The hotel rooms have TOTO washlet, i.e. the toilet that washes ones bottom and/or genital area. We don't use it, the creepy thing is that the toilet will get into motion at some random time, making noise even when it has not been used for hours.

TOTO has its own mind, making noise

Broken closet light

The room's closet light malfunctioned on second or third night of our stay, as shown in the previous journal. It is not easy to spot the problem during daytime room service. The guest needs to report this type issues to front desk. During this pandemic time, I didn't think the hotel would send technicians to fix it while quarantined guests were in the room. So I fixed the problem myself using bandit!

 The smelly hallway

Not sure what causes it, the carpeted hallway outside our room is smelly: A smell of old, dirty carpet. This is a problem the hotel workers should have noticed and reported. The homewood hotel we stayed right before we left Texas, which is an very old hotel, has the same smell in its carpeted hall ways.

The only way to eliminate the smell is to replace the old carpet, or deep clean it regularly. That's what 5 star hotel should do!
