Rail Corridor Trail - Central

Hailed as one of the best trails in Singapore by timeout.com, Rail Corridor trail is a trail built on the obsolete railroad connecting central Singapore (Tanjong Pagar) to its northern border to Malaysia at Woodlands. The total length of the corridor is 24 km. The trail's northern portion is still under construction.  Current Rail Corridor trail is 13km long, northern trailhead is located at Hillview road near Railway mall, and southern trailhead is at Tanjong Pagar Railway station.

Today we went to hike on Rail Corridor trail, and found that the exact current northern trailhead is Upper Bukit Timah Truss Bridge, which is near Rail mall.

The trail was pretty busy when we started hiking around 10am, which was late for a morning hike.

It took no time for us to see that the rail corridor trail had no rail rack, except that at the truss bridge, none to the south of the bridge. For the rail corridor central section we hiked, there are 4 short tracks, at trailhead, at railway bridge Hindhede Crossing, the third, and best preserved, at Bukit Timah truss bridge, and at the old Bukit Timah Railway station,

many people hike and bike on this trail in the morning

The trail is well paved, lush green at both sides, tall trees, small bushes, high grasses. The area is a great habitat for birds.

We heard many bird chirpings, but only saw mynas, oriental magpie robins, and occasionally long tailed parakeets flying overhead. I heard some new chirps, but could not see the birds due to the tall and dense trees. We did see a couple other birds, we saw before, lineated barbet, and yellow vented bulbul, by chance, when they flew across the trail in front of our eyes, and landed in a tree or a plant.

This yellow vented bulbul was about to pursue a mate

We turned around at the intersection of the corridor and Bukit Timah diversion canal. The trail is on the dam like object in the middle of the following picture.

We finished the 9km hike in two and half hours and had lunch a Springleaf Prata Place, Indian food, steps away from the northern trailhead - The food was delicious!

The trail is good, and could be a good place for longer distance run practice, up to 26 km (13x2), in future.

Videos of Wildlife in Actions

Sightings of birds or other wildlife in actions, such as kingfishers diving for food, otter eating fishes, are not easy. I was lucky to see and record a few such actions in the first six weeks of 2022.

I saw and took pictures of forest kingfisher, common kingfisher, stork kingfisher, and white throat kingfisher at SBG and other parks in Singapore. But mostly I saw them perching on tree branches by water, patiently waiting for prey to come by.

In January, I saw and recorded, what I believed, a forest kingfisher diving into water to catch small fish. Later in the month, we witnessed a stork kingfisher catching a pretty large red fish at Keppel wetland, but it was a bit far away from us, I did not have good pictures of its actions.

One late afternoon, while strolling around Symphony lake, we saw tiny birds with dark blue feather and orange head, perching on a directional sign, which turned out to be pacific swallows. A common bird at the garden, but they are restless, and I did not identify them before.

Since we saw smooth coated otter near echo lake at botanic garden, we saw them a few more times around the park, at symphony lake, swan lake, but we did not see them eating fishes, until this year. After seeing a large group otters swimming in swan lake, on the way home, we saw otters in the pond at Ginger garden, one otter was eating a fish, with its front paws grabbing it!

Later in January, I heard new bird chirpings by Nassim gate taxi station, looking into woods, I saw a group of banded woodpeckers! A couple days later, we saw a banded woodpecker, pecking a hole at Hampstead Wetland.

When we visited Bishan-An Mo Kio Park, we ventured onto dike separating wetlands, and saw a large group of small birds eating flowers, they turned out to be orange cheeked waxbills.

We saw long tailed parakeets flying over the canopy of tall trees pretty frequently. Late in January, one parakeet perched at eye level in a small tree. It posed for me for photos and flew away shortly afterward :).

The first time we saw the crimson sunbird, a beautiful tiny song bird, was at Sugei Buloh. Then we saw it again at McRitchie by trail side. Last week at Botanic Garden, I heard its beautiful chirp again, right in the bushes by the trail side. Looking into the bushes several times, I finally spotted it, and capture it on photos and video.

Ashy Tailorbird, is another song bird, not as beautiful as crimson sunbird, but its voice is great. Last Friday morning at Gallop extension of the Singapore Botanic Garden, we saw a male ashy tailorbird making calls at the top of a tree, and a female ashy tailorbird nearby, and they went into the woods together.

On Saturday morning, we went to Lor Halus Red Bridge and surrounding areas, I saw blue tailed bee eater at eye level, and it caught a bee in mid air! unfortunately no video this time.

Timing is everything for sighting of wildlife in action for wildlife enthusiasts like us. Our chance of seeing them increase with time since we go to outdoors regularly and on the lookout for them every time.

Uniquely Singapore Problems

We have been in Singapore for a few months. We observed a few things uniquely Singapore (*) when compared to US.  The first observation was that few people was out and about during the day, which was due to high UV year-round from 10am to 4pm. The second observation was, after I started driving in Singapore,  tight parking spaces and annoying and confusing changing street names for one straight street.

Once we moved from hotel to apartment, I paid more attentions to the buildings and the rooms, and observed and confirmed more uniquely Singapore problems.

No ventilation to outdoors

When we were in hotels, I suspected that there was no ventilation to outdoors. The suspicion was confirmed, and reconfirmed when we moved into an apartment building. Initially I thought it was because of the age of the buildings, but checking with locals, and people who live in new high rises, Singapore residential buildings have no ventilations to outdoor!

So what?

This is a serious issue to me, no ventilation to outdoor means staled air stays inside - heat and smells from cooking or dryer, odor from trash, exhale from our own breath, and thus poor indoor air quality!*

Locals typically open their windows during the days, and close windows and turn on AC for nights. This makes rooms hot and humid during the day, a big issue for work from home people.

When I noticed the problem, I initially open windows everyday in early morning when it is relatively cool, and close windows when the Sun rises. The problem we had was that bugs, insects, especially mosquitos accumulated indoor despite the fact we are in 8th floor. After a while, we got frequent bug bites! Now I open windows once a week during a sunny time, when those insects are hiding.

The ventilator in the kitchen is a joke. It sucks the oil and hot air from cooking pans and eject them into the whole kitchen. Checking with others, this is a universal problem as well.

Lousy Laundry Machines for people living in Apartments

While apartment hunting, we noticed many people dry their laundry on drying racks or on balcony cloth lines. Initially I thought how environmentally conscious those people were.

In reality the fact is that the laundry machines in Singapore are lousy. Due to space limitation in apartment buildings, the laundry machines are small in sizes, and no ventilation to outdoor makes the dryer inefficient.

When we were in an apartment in a service hotel, the 2 in 1 laundry machine was very inefficient - it took a few hours to wash a small load of laundry and a few more to dry the laundry. What made the laundry machine not acceptable was that it was a wrinkling machine, it wrinkled our clothes to the  point of no return, we could not iron out the wrinkles.

When we moved to a large regular apartment, we have separate unit for washing and drying, the machines' volume is slightly larger, the wrinkling issue is lessened, but the inefficiency is still there. Washing machine takes a couple hours or more to wash, and in the end the laundry is till damp; drying machine takes long time to dry.

The Most Light Polluted City

We were amazed by the beautiful night scenes at Marina Bay when we first went there - landmark of Sands Hotel and its Sky park. These lights and other lights in surrounding high rises are on for the whole night time! Not only pedestrians don't need street lights for walk, the low clouds passing by are light up by these lights. It seems all commercial buildings keep their lights on for the whole night. We were surprised to see many apartment buildings keep the outside lights on during our January29-30, 2022 coast to coast overnight hike!

Marina Bay Night Scene

The impact of the light pollution is obvious, we can only see moon and/or a handful stars on a clear night. According to one study, Singaporeans can only see 0.5% of visible stars. Children lose their wonder of the galaxy we are in. Migrating birds are misguided by the man made lights. The light pollution is also detrimental to our health in long term.

I am aware of this first hand because I look up to the sky frequently. I could not see anything in a clear night sky most of the time when we walked Fort Canning Park at night, I could not see stars when I am in Singapore Botanic Garden at night. We saw a handful of stars during our coast to coast night hiking.

The fact that Singapore is the most light polluted city in the world is well documented in a blog from NUS, and references therein. The following is light emission intensity map for Singapore and surround areas, link to the source of information.

I know many of the lights are for tourism purpose. How about turn the decorative lights off after midnight for commercial buildings? Install sensors for outdoor night lights?

*The one thing we noticed early on was the Sunrise, Sunset times were nearly constant due to its proximity to equator (1.29 degree North). Not a problem, but a fact.

** AC outside unit does not bring outside air in.

Maui Beaches

My blog about Maui would be incomplete if it does not include Maui's beaches.

Maui has many beautiful beaches. Most beaches at Maui are located at southwest side of the island, and they are divided into south beaches, west beaches (the mid section of the southwest shore), and north beaches. It has to be Sunny to enjoy them! That's why we adjusted our plan for beach days.

Kaanapali Beach

The west beaches are most popular as they are close to Lahaina downtown, where hotels, rental condominiums are concentrated. It has 3 mile long white sand beach, crystal clear water, big surf, a good spot for snorkeling, and the cliff diving from Black Rock. No professional divers on this, many tourists climbed the rock and jumped off.

Kapalua Bay Beach

A small beautiful beach! Kapalua means arms embracing sea. This name perfectly describes the feature of the bay, rock shores extend into the sea just the right amount, shield the bay from waves.

It is the trail head of north coastline trail. We arrived at the beach early, 8am, set up out tent, and hiked on the north coastline trail, then had great time snorkeling. We left the beach after the beach became crowded around noon time.

MaKenna Beach

One kilometer long white sand beach, facing Lanai island, Kaho'olawe, Molokai. A good place for swimming. North to the MaKenna is a small beach, scenic Oneuli beach, which had black sands.

Whale Watching at Lanai Island

Humpback whales go to Maui for breeding and give birth to their calves because of the calm, warm shallow water between Maui and nearby smaller islands, Lanai (15 km, nearest land distance)), Molokai(10 km), and Kaho'olawae (12 km).

Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Kaho'olawae islands

What was unique about this whale watching trip we had, compared with our previous whale watching trips, was that we saw whale breaching water 5 times! 4 times really close and 1 time a bit far away.

We booked the trip with a small provider at Lahaina Harbor, whose boat was actually a speed rafter, a small boat compared to other whale watching boats. This along with a pretty aggressive captain, made it possible for us to see whales up close and personal.

Lahaina Harbor

A speed rafter

Shortly after we left the harbor, we saw a mother whale with her calf swimming, in and out of the water, and a whale breaching water far away south from the boat, east to Lanai island. Our boat, however, moved closer to the northern shore of Lanai per Capitan's intuition, and we saw  whales swimming around multiple times, and blew air. The most exciting part of the whale watching was when they breached water unexpectedly, and really close to the boat for 4 times! But I did not catch any of them on my camera. Justin and Nicholas each captured the breaching once, and served as proof of my claim!

Watching whales breaching water in documentary can never match the first hand experience.
