Foliage at White Rock Lake

Last Sunday, November 27, 2002, we went to our favorite place in DFW area, white rock lake, in the morning. We ran around the lake in full circle for the first time.

We arrived at the lake shortly after 8am, and parked at a parking lot near east lake highland drive and north Buckner boulevard. The air was crisply cool, and the sky was brilliantly blue with no trace of cloud. The rising sun shone on the trees by the lake, made the foliage so much more colorful and splendid. A gorgeous day and a perfect time for long distance running!

There were quite a few joggers, runners and bikers in the park. We ran counter clockwise around the lake. Our first stop for pictures was near 3 km marker, by the bridge over the white rock creek. We asked a jogger walking by to take a picture of us.

Running over a couple of boardwalks, we reached the west side of the lake. There were many usual water fowls flying around, double breasted cormorants, ducks, American coots, egrets, herons... I spotted an eagle as well(*)!

What was new to me was the southern end of the lake … the dam, the spill way ….

The dam at the southern end is 750 meter long (close to 2500 feet). It provides a different vista.

Down stream to the dam is a flood plain, with trees, bushes …. snow egrets, herons, and other birds rested on the trees under the thunderous water fall (from the spill way)

The most beautiful place on that day was the cove by the boomerang boat house: the colorful foliage and its reflection in the water, a grand egret standing at the edge of water at the far end, an American scoot.

Due to frequent stops for photos, and my half running/half walking, it took us 3 hours to complete the full loop. We thoroughly enjoyed this marvelous morning  at white rock lake

Note

* In addition to foliage, another motivation for us to visit White Rock Lake again was the report of a pair of bald eagles set up nest by the lake. We looked for the nest but did not find it.
